  • Ninette James FROM COFEK KENYA Happy New Year from Cofek. We trust that this mail finds you well and in high spirits.  After a successful Cofek Petition, the National Assembly Health Committee recommended that the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMDP) 2016 exorbitant rates be immediately replaced with the 2006 version. Health Cabinet Secretary Ms Sicily Kariuki was directed to degazette the current rates and gazette the 2006 rates. This has not happened.  In addition, she was directed by Parliament to initiate public consultations based on the 2006 rates. But the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) and other quarters are up in arms. KMA, for one, has publicly promised to oppose the move to lower the exorbitant rates. They are keen to bake their cake and have it on professional rates. Oblivious of centrality of public participation as well as the fact that the MPs are representatives of the people, KMA is spoiling for a losing and an unnecessary battle.  We are appealing to them to engage soberly. Most of them have been trained with full support by the taxpayers. Doctors cannot turn around and engage in onon-violent robbery. Consumers of their services a.k.a patients are resisting it.  Cofek proposes that the 2016 rates are cut by at least 70 per cent. On the alternative, we propose that the 2006 rates are increased to no more than 20 per cent. You are aware that medical bills are a scare to many families. We need to lower the cost of medication, at all costs.  It is for this reason that we invite ALL consumers, especially those who know the pain of exorbitant bills to come to the KMPDB public consultation with details as follows;  Date   : Tuesday, January 8, 2019 Venue : Crowne Plaza, Upper Hill, Nairobi Time   : 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Come and inform Kenyan doctors that – we love them, we respect them, we need them BUT the exorbitant, illegal and unjustified fees must go – once and for all!  Please share this message widely. Confirm attendance by sending text to: 0715555550 or email:  We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday at 9am. Thank you.  Yours faithfully,  Pjorn Muriuki, Program Officer, Consumers Federation of Kenya Subscribe to Cofek Breaking News, Send 'Cofek On' to 40408
